The kids and I received three books, A Boy and His Dog, Dying is Part of This World, and Don’t Forget Me from Kayla Jarmon. Originally, I was just going to talk about A Boy and His Dog since dogs are near and dear to our heart. However, the other titles got me curious and glad I took the time to read them as they are precious and insightful for younger children. Here is my Kayla Jarmon books review.
A BOY AND HIS DOG
My 13-year old daughter has raised our Puggle “Lily” since she was 5 weeks old. She slept with her, cleaned up her messes, and walked her outside. They are very attached. She is now 4 years old, and wherever my daughter goes, she goes. While this book is about a boy, we can still relate to it as my daughter and son are both attached to our dog, Lily. This book is a wonderful reminder of the special benefits of having a dog.
A Boy and His Dog is a wonderful and sweet story about the daily relationship and loyalty between a boy and dog. It made my heart warm and fuzzy reading it. Our dog tends to bark loudly and I get upset about it at times, but instead, this book reminds me how special she is to all of us.
I would say this title is for ages Kindergarten up to 2nd grade. Both of my kids reviewed it even though they are way past that age, but had the smiles reading it. They told me it was a great story and fun to read.
We also enjoyed the illustrations, it’s simple yet well done! The book is illustrated by Piper Miru and is 40+ pages long.
DON’T FORGET ME
Don’t Forget Me entails a beautiful and touching conversation between God and a baby during pregnancy and after birth. It’s a great reminder that God is the author and giver of life. You will want to add this to your list for expectant parents and siblings! Warning: it’s a tear jerker! This is also geared towards younger children but I would say up to 4th or 5th grade.

DYING IS A PART OF THIS WORLD
This one I was a bit hesitant to open up. I wear my heart on my sleeve. Yes, everyone dies and it’s a part of life, but sometimes it’s hard to think about and even imagine it will happen to you someday. With Dying is a Part of This World, follow a conversation with a mom and child talking about the fear of death. You’ll find scripture verses and discussion questions to provoke meaningful and necessary conversations. The good news is with God’s help, you can overcome the fear of death!
I would recommend this book for 4th grade up to middle school. You may consider this for your own child even with no experience in losing a loved one. This will better prepare your child when he/she faces death. You’ll find more information by clicking on the image below.
